SCORES Model™

Fostering Safety, Connection, and Success in the Classroom

The SCORES Model™ is an innovative approach to classroom learning that is designed to equip teachers and students with the tools they need to thrive in and outside of the classroom.

The acronym SCORES stands for Safety, Connection, Open-Dialog, Restoration, Engagement, and Self-Awareness. This model refers to a set of principles and practices that aim to improve academic achievement, classroom behavior, and student motivation by fostering positive relationships between educators and learners. Teachers use evidence-based social and emotional learning (SEL) strategies to support students in developing self-awareness and becoming advocates for their individual growth and learning. Through the SCORES model, educators and students work together to build safe and supportive classroom environments, engage in open dialogue, restore relationships when conflicts arise, and promote engagement and lifelong learning.

Here is a brief explanation of each element of the SCORES Model:

  • S-Safety: The first element of the SCORES model is safety, which refers to creating a physically, emotionally, and socially safe learning environment for all students. Students need to have their physical and emotional needs met in order to learn.

  • C-Connection: At the core of the SCORES Model™ is a belief in the power of partnerships, referring to the building of positive relationships between students and teachers. When students feel connected to their teachers, they are more likely to engage in learning and exhibit positive behavior in the classroom.

  • O-Open-Dialog: The third element of the SCORES model is open-dialog inviting clear and honest communication between students and teachers. By encouraging students to express their thoughts and feelings, teachers can better understand their students' needs and tailor their instruction accordingly.

  • R-Restoration: The fourth element of the SCORES model is restoration, which refers to creating a process for repairing relationships and resolving conflicts in the classroom. By teaching students conflict resolution skills, teachers can help students learn from mistakes and work through disagreements in a constructive and respectful manner.

  • E-Engagement: The fifth element of the SCORES model is engagement, which allows for the creation of opportunities for students to actively participate in their own learning. When students are engaged in the learning process, they are more likely to retain information and  foster a love of learning.

  • S-Self-Awareness: The final element of the SCORES model is self-awareness, which refers to helping students develop a better understanding of their own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. By promoting self-reflection and self-regulation, teachers can help students become more successful learners and advocates for their own growth and learning.

The SCORES Model™ is grounded in research-based social and emotional learning (SEL) strategies. It recognizes that students require a range of skills beyond traditional academic knowledge to succeed in today's rapidly changing world. These skills include self-awareness, self-regulation, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. By incorporating SEL strategies into classroom practices, the SCORES Model™ helps students develop these essential skills and become more resilient, confident, and successful individuals.
